Dimensions, default dimensions and value posting rules
Dimensions are tags like Department, Area or Project that you attach to entries so you can analyse them later. They replace the need for a separate G/L account for every department.
Global vs shortcut dimensions
| Type | How many | What it gives you |
|---|---|---|
| Global dimensions | 2 | Stored on entries, usable as filters on every page and report |
| Shortcut dimensions | up to 8 (incl. the 2 global) | Can be shown as columns on journal and document lines |
| Other dimensions | unlimited | Available through the Dimensions page on each line |
Change global dimensions with the Change Global Dimensions action. It updates existing entries.
Default dimensions
Set default dimensions on master data (customers, vendors, items, G/L accounts and so on). They are copied to documents and journals automatically.
Value Posting rules
| Value Posting | Rule |
|---|---|
| (blank) | No rule; any value or none |
| Code Mandatory | A value is required, any value |
| Same Code | Must be the value set on the default dimension (or blank if none is set) |
| No Code | Must have no value |
Dimension combinations
On the Dimension Combinations page you can block two dimensions from being used together, or limit which specific value pairs are allowed.
Exam traps
“Required, but user chooses” = Code Mandatory. “Must always be X” = Same Code. “Never allowed” = No Code.
