Power Platform components and environments

PL-900 · Power Platform basics and Dataverse · Updated

Microsoft Power Platform lets people build apps, automate work and analyze data with little code. The exam starts here, so you need to know what each product does and where your work lives.

The core products

ProductWhat it does
Power AppsBuilds custom business apps (canvas, model-driven)
Power AutomateAutomates workflows and tasks (cloud flows, desktop flows)
Power BITurns data into reports and dashboards
Copilot StudioBuilds chatbots (agents). It replaces Power Virtual Agents
Power PagesBuilds secure external websites

Behind them sit shared pieces: Microsoft Dataverse (data), connectors (links to other services), AI Builder (prebuilt and custom AI models) and Copilot (natural-language help while you build).

Environments

An environment is a container for apps, flows, tables and other resources. It separates data, security and settings, so a test app does not touch live data.

TypeUse
DefaultCreated automatically for every tenant. Everyone with a licence can build here
ProductionLive apps and data
SandboxTesting and development. Can be copied, reset or restored
DeveloperFree, personal environment for one maker
TrialShort-term evaluation

Each environment can have one Dataverse database. Resources in one environment are not visible in another, so moving an app means exporting it in a solution.

Where you work

  • make.powerapps.com (maker portal): build apps, tables and flows.
  • Power Platform admin center: manage environments, capacity, data policies and security for the whole tenant.
  • Microsoft 365 admin center: manage users and licences.
  • Microsoft Entra ID: identity and sign-in for all users.

Data loss prevention (DLP)

DLP policies are set per environment or tenant in the admin center. They group connectors into Business, Non-business and Blocked. A flow or app cannot mix Business and Non-business connectors, which stops company data leaking to personal services.

Solutions

A solution is a package of components (apps, flows, tables). Use it to move work between environments, for example from sandbox to production, and to keep versions.

Exam traps

  • Power Virtual Agents is the old name for Copilot Studio.
  • The default environment is shared by all users. Do not put sensitive production solutions there.
  • Environment security is separate from tenant identity: Entra ID signs people in, but roles inside an environment decide what they can do.
  • DLP groups connectors, not users or tables.
  • The admin center manages the platform; the maker portal is for building.

Practice questions

Choose an answer, then review the explanation to check your understanding.

1. A company wants to build a website for external customers to log in and view their cases. Which Power Platform product fits best?

Show answer

2. A user with a Microsoft 365 licence starts building a canvas app but nobody created an environment for them. Where is the app saved?

Show answer

Answer: B.Every tenant has a default environment, and all licensed users can create apps and flows there.

3. Which tool do administrators use to manage environments, data policies and capacity for the whole platform?

Show answer

Answer: B.The Power Platform admin center manages environments, DLP policies, capacity and analytics.

4. You want a safe place to test changes before moving them to live users. Which environment type is intended for this?

Show answer

Answer: B.A sandbox environment is for testing and development and can be copied or reset.
